Spot Fire Drills For New Fire Practitioners

Spot Fire Drills For New Fire Practitioners

Spot fire drills are a critical training component for new fire practitioners, building the awareness and rapid decision-making needed to manage real-world fire behavior. These drills simulate the ignition of spot fires—embers cast ahead of the main fire—requiring participants to quickly size up the situation, communicate effectively, and implement suppression tactics. Practitioners learn to identify high-risk conditions such as wind shifts, receptive fuels, and terrain features that contribute to spotting potential.

During drills, emphasis is placed on proper tool use, crew coordination, and maintaining situational awareness. New practitioners practice deploying resources efficiently, establishing anchor points, and containing spot fires before they grow beyond initial attack capability. These exercises also reinforce safety protocols, including lookouts, communications, escape routes, and safety zones (LCES).

By repeatedly training in controlled environments, practitioners gain confidence and competence. Spot fire drills not only sharpen technical skills but also strengthen teamwork—ensuring crews are prepared to respond quickly and effectively when spot fires occur during prescribed burns or wildfires.
